Hoverla is the Highest Mountain of Ukraine

Steep slopes of Hoverla are challenging, but attract many amateur hikers each year. Hoverla is the highest peak in the Ukrainian Carpathians and a very popular hiking destination. A small fee is collected at the entrance to Chornohora National Park. After a rough drive over the final several kilometers to reach the base of the trail, the footpath steeply rises, first through the spruce forest and then over the alpine meadows at the elevation above 1400 m.  Due to the intensity of the Hoverla hike and long driving distance from Lviv, it is recommend as a 2-day trip. In which case, visiting local tourist attractions can be included while driving to Hoverla trail; wooden churches, castle ruins, a museum of Ukrainian Easter eggs and a souvenir market.

National Border Marker along the Kinczyk Bukowski Trail

Mount Kinczyk Bukowski straddles the Ukrainian – Polish national border and can only be reached from Ukraine, because the adjacent area on the Polish side is a National Park closed for all human activity, including hiking. The area along the hiking trail is exceptionally beautiful. It is one of the few islands of wilderness remaining on the European continent. The lower part of the trail is a UNESCO listed old-growth beech forest, while at the top, hikers will observe views of grassy mountain slopes and dense forest of the National Park down below. A permit from the border patrol authorities is required to hike in the area of Kinczyk Bukowski. Applications for permits are submitted at least 10 days before a hiking trip. We can help by filling out an application with the border office to obtain a permit. While driving to the start of the trail from Lviv, we stop at one of Carpathian World Heritage Sites – St. Michael’s wooden church in Uzhok.
