Money Questions for Travelers to Ukraine

…How much do things in Ukraine cost? What money to bring to Ukraine? What currency is accepted there? Will my credit card work in Ukraine..?

These are some of the questions most people ask when planning a trip to Ukraine. Here are some tips that may be useful for visitors to Ukraine:

Ukraine’s National Banknotes are called Hryvnia, UAH
  • Ukrainian money is called Hryvnia or UAH. Exchange rates often fluctuate, so Google for the current rate before you visit.
  • US Dollars and Euros can be exchanged at all exchange booths and banks in Ukraine. Most banks also exchange other currencies, such as Canadian and Australian Dollars, Euros and GB Pounds.
  • While local food in Ukraine is cheap, anything that is imported costs the same or more than in North America or Europe. For example, potatoes are about 20% of what you pay at home, while bananas cost the same or more.
  • Restaurant food in Ukraine costs only a fraction of what you would expect to pay in the West. Budget about USD 50 per day if you plan on eating out in Ukraine in a city like Lviv.
  • Hotels in a bigger town like Lviv would set you back about USD 50 per night for a standard single room.
  • Taxis and public transport cost less in Ukraine. City buses and trains are a real bargain if you are willing to give up comfort for money.
  • It is best to exchange money at banks in Ukraine. Airports and train station exchange booths often have lower rates.
  • Credit cards are accepted at most hotels, restaurants and stores in Ukraine. But they are rarely accepted in small stores, and especially in rural areas.
  • You can withdraw Ukrainian money at most ATMs using your credit card. An exchange fee will apply on each transaction. Notify your credit card company of your visit to Ukraine ahead of time.
  • Visitors may bring to Ukraine in cash up to 10,000 Euro or equivalent in other currencies. This may be more than you need, but bring several hundred dollars in cash. Make sure that the bills you bring look new. Stained, torn, worn or damaged bills may be declined or exchanged at a lower rate.
